Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio 2026: Stop Texting Your Ex and Start Writing Your Book

October 24 to November 13, 2026. Back up your files, double-check your tickets, and for the love of all that is holy, put down the phone.

Good morning, fellow astrology enthusiasts! (I said enthusiast, not astrologer. Please hold your credentials requests.) Mercury goes retrograde this Saturday, which means technology is about to betray us, our emails are about to say things we didn’t mean, and the internet is about to tell you, once again, that your ex is coming back.

They are not. We need to talk about that. But first, the logistics.

The Schedule (Mark It, Screenshot It, Tattoo It. No, Wait, Don’t Do That Last One)

  • October 4: Mercury enters its pre-retrograde shadow at 5 degrees Scorpio. Yes, you were warned weeks ago and no, you didn’t notice. Also, I subscribed to the idea that these shadow periods do not truly exist. You have been that bill you need to pay since August … 2025. Its 2026 the collection calls are on time.
  • October 24: Mercury stations retrograde at 20 degrees 59 minutes of Scorpio. Time to keep up with the deep introspection.
  • November 13: Mercury stations direct at 5 degrees 2 minutes from Scorpio. On the same day Venus goes direct. The universe loves a dramatic group finale.
  • November 30: The post-retrograde shadow clears, and we may all exhale. I mean that if you waited until like November 11th, 2026, to work on yourself…. You had legit 6 weeks! Two personal planets telling you get your $h!t together -_-.

This is the final Mercury retrograde of 2026, and it’s happening in Scorpio, the sign of secrets, hidden truths, power dynamics, and emotional depth. Scorpio does not want small talk. Scorpio wants to know what you really meant by “fine.”

The Double Retrograde: Venus Gets a Roommate

If you’ve been following along, Venus has been retrograding since October 3, putting you through the shadow-work wringer. She’s about to go back out of Scorpio and into Libra on October 25, and Mercury is moving in right as she changes rooms. For the next few weeks, Venus (your heart, your money, your self-worth) and Mercury (your words, your thoughts, your tech) are retrograde at the same time.

Think of it as a group project where one partner handles your feelings, the other hand handles your phone, and neither has read the instructions.

Here’s the good news: the two are a relay team. Venus sent you inward to do the shadow work. Mercury arrives to ask, “Great, now how do you talk about it?”

First, a Public Service Announcement About Your Ex

Every single Mercury retrograde article says the same thing: your ex is coming back, review your old relationships, text them at 2 a.m. Let’s be honest with each other for once.

Stop worrying about that man or woman who doesn’t want you. You can do better (maybe… or you are the drama?). Stop mourning the friendship that fell apart, it was toxic! I promise it was toxic. You’ll find better friends. I promise. And whoever that raggedy situation you call for fun and regret the next day. Cut them off or you will be listening to Mary J. Blige “I can love you?” no Pick me anthems in 2026. Go listen to Megan the Stallion and sign up for Pilates.  It’s not worth it.

Also, a hot take: these retrogrades in Scorpio and Libra are not really about love. I know everybody wants them to be. They’re about interpersonal development, meaning how you show up in the world. It’s less “will they text back” and more “why do I keep picking people who don’t.”

What you should do is reevaluate how you communicate. Specifically, ask yourself: am I clearly saying what I need? Or have I been quietly telling everyone I’m fine because I don’t want to seem needy? Spoiler: People can’t read minds, and your group chat can’t either. Also, walk away from the Group Chat and schedule a therapist call. You will thank me in 2027.

My Theory (Which I Am About to Test on Myself, So Please Clap)

Here’s where I get a little controversial. I think Mercury retrograde is the best time of the year to work on your creative projects.

I know. Someone in the comments is already typing, “But Mercury retrogrades are chaos.” Exactly! Mercury rules communication. When communication is discombobulated, the universe is practically handing you a bullhorn and saying, sit down, slow down, and plan what you actually want to say. The retrograde is introspection with a deadline.

So, here’s the strategy: plan during the retrograde, execute when it ends.

  • Want to write a nonfiction book? Do the research. If your topic is genetic adaptations in frogs, congratulations, that is a lot of reading. Mercury retrograde is the perfect time for it.
  • Want to write a Tolkien-style fantasy epic? Do your character development and world-building now, then write it when you’re out of the retrograde. Next retrograde, build more world. By the time Mercury has gone backward a few times, you will have a book, a map, and a fictional language nobody asked for.
  • Have you scattered personal essays in notebooks across your house? It’s getting cold outside. Instead of shopping on October 24, pull out the notebooks, spread them on the floor, and put a little bit together every day. You may end up with 400 pages of essays and a very strong feeling of “oh, snap.” Then figure out how to get it published, and start saving for self-publishing if that’s the route.
  • Don’t want to write anything at all? Fine. Use the retrograde to research what you do want. Say you want to open a business. Research the business. Understand how it makes money. Talk to someone about finances. Just do not fill out the loan paperwork. We’ve talked about this.

Is it the traditional take? No. Mercury retrograde is usually sold as a month-long warning label. But we have been living through these cycles since the dawn of a new age, and it’s an optical illusion, so you might as well use the illusion to your benefit. Some of us are tired of microwave astrology and want to start using universal timing to our benefit.

Your House, Your Mercury (Where Is Scorpio in Your Chart?)

Same deal as with Venus: look at where Scorpio sits in your chart, then see what Venus already asked you about in that house and let Mercury finish the sentence. A few examples:

  • First house: Your identity. How are you communicating with your true self to the world?
  • Second house: Your finances. How are you earning your day-to-day money, and are you ignoring ways to make more?
  • Fifth house: Creativity, passion, partnership, and probably a few other things I can’t remember. Look at what’s calling you.

What Mercury Retrograde Does Not Mean

A brief myth-busting section, because the internet has been spreading nonsense:

  • “Travel will be horrible.” It won’t. It just means slowing down and double-checking everything. Have your tickets. Have your money. Have your charger. That’s it. That’s all it means. No ritual, no panic.
  • “Your ex will return.” We covered that. See above.
  • “You must do something drastic.” You really don’t. Have a cup of tea. Work through your issues.
  • “This is a bad time to start things.” Start the planning. Save the launch for later.

But Is This Even Real? (Billionaires Think So)

I was told once, and I believe it, that billionaires use astrologers. Somewhere out there, Neil deGrasse Tyson just sighed deeply. But yes, they come to astrologers for charts and planning, whether it’s mundane astrology or personal astrology. Is that true for every billionaire? I can’t say. Do I take comfort in it anyway? Absolutely.

A note on my own practice: I’m an astrology enthusiast, not an astrologer. I follow tropical, Western astrology, which I know is not the only form. If you follow Hellenistic astrology, none of this may apply to you, and that’s okay. To the commenters who would like to ask me to repent: thank you for your concern. Thank you. Please enjoy your tea.

The Retrograde Survival Guide

Do:

  • Back up your devices and double-check your plans, tickets, and money.
  • Reevaluate how you communicate your needs, honestly and out loud.
  • Research and plan your book, business, or big idea.
  • Sit with the shadow work Venus kicked up.
  • Pick up your notebooks and make a little progress every day.

Don’t:

  • Text your ex (I will know)
  • Rush into major contracts or new agreements before mid-November
  • Fill out the loan paperwork.
  • Assume that every glitch is a cosmic sign (sometimes your Wi-Fi is just bad)

The Final Word

Venus came to fix you. Mercury arrives to help you say it. Between the two of them, you’ve got six weeks to do the inner work, communicate better, and map out something big. And because this is the last Mercury retrograde of the year, you’ll still have time to say, “I started this in October, let me finish it strong before December 31.” Before you know it, you’ll be in a brand-new place, a brand-new heart space, with a brand-new draft.

If you take this advice and write a book, come back to my comments and tell me. I’ll happily review it on my book review website.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have notebooks to dig out.

What are you planning during Mercury retrograde? Tell me in the comments, and don’t say “text.”
